Carmen DeLeon

Award - November 2021 CEERA

School: Lee Elementary
Position: ESOL Aide

Carmen is a huge asset to Lee Elementary! She is currently our only Aide in the ESOL department, and because we are so close to the K State campus, we have a lot of students that do not speak English at all or only speak very little. I cannot imagine how scary that can be for these students when they first arrive, but thanks to Carmen's patience and positivity, she not only puts the students at ease, but she also helps the teachers and other staff members who often feel helpless when they are not sure how to communicate with these students. No matter what she is doing, even if it is her break time, she's always willing to help. Carmen is also a very good teacher. The students she works with are successful because of her help. Being a Title 1 Aide myself, Carmen and I are often administering the same tests at the same time, and I know if I ever have a question about which students need to be tested or which test we are doing I can always go to Carmen for help. Carmen is also a great team player. We are short staffed this year, and any time we need help with student supervision, Carmen is always one of the first to step up. She is part of the crew that welcomes the students in the morning, and she also has a bus line that she supervises after school. And once her bus line has taken off, she often goes back in to help with other bus lines while they wait. She is also one of our leaders for Jump Rope Club after school on Weds. Lee would not be the same without Mrs. DeLeon. We are very lucky to have her on our team!
